The King Tiger or Tiger II was a German World War Two heavy tank developed as a successor to the earlier Tiger I (Panzerkampfwagen VI). The name "King Tiger" was first given to the new design by the American military, but after hearing about it, the Germans began using it as well, in the "Germanised" form of Königstiger. Although the original design was to have been based on the earlier Tiger I, the additional armour plating and upturned main armament of the new tank eventually gave it a massive vehicle weight of some 69 tons, necessitating an entirely new design from the ground up.

The Tiger II was widely feared by its opponents, particularly on the Western Front of the conflict, where the Allied forces possessed no tanks or tank destroyers that were a match for the German design. However, the Tiger II was also plagued with mechanical problems - mainly due to the overheating of engines not powerful enough for the massive weight of the tanks. The resulted in many Tiger IIs being lost to non-combat causes.

The Porsche and Henschel companies each manufactured its own version of turret for the Tiger II. The earlier Porsche turret design featured well-sloped armour and compound-curved surfaces, but it suffered the fatal flaw of having an area just under the main gun that, when hit by enemy fire, behaved as a "shot trap" that deflected incoming rounds down and into the chassis of the tank. This flaw saw the production run of Porsche turret-mounted Tiger Its end at only 50 vehicles, against the 450 Henschel turret-mounted versions that were eventally produced.
